North American states

The discovery of America by Europeans was the start of the emergence of new states in this part of the world. The struggle for supremacy between the major colonial empires affected the situation in America: at first it was dominated by Spain, so there were many Spanish-speaking colonies. Then followed an active intervention from Britain. The leading city ports were being ruined, built anew under a new flag, strengthened by ramparts and yet again ruined by another opponent. As a result, due to the peculiarities of local geography, three major powers were formed on the mainland, them being Canada, the United States of America and Mexico, which started to have influence on the situation in the whole region. Islands and archipelagos of the Caribbean Sea have always been under different protectors. In the middle of the twentieth century there was a decolonization, and almost all of the islands gained independence. For example, a small country of Antigua and Barbuda ceased to be a British territory in 1981, but in economic and political terms it remains in the same dependent state. Central American countries had important implications for policy and trade, and almost all of them have suffered ill effects from the large northern neighbors and overseas empires. Panama should be noted especially, for in this place was constructed the Panama Canal – a waterway, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
